Just hearing the word butter makes people’s mouths water. Why? Because it makes pretty much everything more delicious. It’s the bacon of dairy. But here’s the problem, too much butter is unhealthy, as it contains those nasty saturated fats. You know, the ones that clog arteries and give you those unfortunate rolls over you waistband?

If your aim is to drop a few pounds and make your belly as flat as a cutting board, then you’re going to need to ditch the butter and use some healthier options. Here are three alternatives that can help you lose the butter (and some weight).
The most obvious choice, olive oil is used a lot to replace butter. But did you know you could replace butter with olive oil when baking? Just use 3/4 cup of olive oil for every cup of butter. It’s great to add to mashed potatoes instead of butter and even on steamed veggies. While butter is tough on the heart, olive oil is supported by the American Heart Association as being good for your old ticker. You’d be crazy not to try it!
Here’s a good alternative for when you want to spread butter over your english muffin or toast. Avocados are, by far, one of the most delicious things on the planet, and they just so happen to be filled with amazing nutrients. Fiber, vitamin K, and potassium, anyone? Just like olive oil, you can use it to bake as well. Use equal parts pureed avocado to that of butter for a new twist on some old baked classics.
You will love almond butter on top of your toast. It’s creamy, flavorful, and filled with polyunsaturated fats (the good kind of fat), fiber, potassium and more. It’s just one more way to replace something that will assist in weight gain for something that will actually help you become a healthier person. So what are you waiting for?
