Dave East

Dave East is a rapper from Harlem, New York. Growing up in Harlem and Queensbridge, Dave was dedicated to playing basketball, playing in high school, and eventually in college. He also played in the Amateur Athletic Union with future NBA players Ty Lawson, Greivis Vasquez, and Kevin Durant.

After basketball didn’t pan out for him, he started selling drugs, which led to him being locked up for six months. During his time in jail, he converted from Catholicism to Islam. As soon as he got out, he committed himself to his rap career. His first few mixtapes got him an ample amount of buzz, and after the release of his sixth mixtape, Insomnia, he was contacted by Nas. Nas expressed his support of his music and signed Dave to his Mass Appeal label by summer 2014.

Two years later, East was included in the XXL Freshman Class of 2016. He was also featured in the BET Hip-Hop Awards Cypher in the same year. After inking a joint venture with Def Jam, he released his 10th mixtape, Kairi Chanel, which is named after his daughter. In 2017, he released his debut EP Paranoia: A True Story, and followed it up with Paranoia 2 a year later.
