Immortal Technique

Immortal Technique is a rapper and activist from Harlem, New York. Born in Peru, his parents emigrated to the states in 1980. Tech grew up rhyming and doing graffiti, but was also constantly involved in fights, leading to multiple arrests.

After enrolling at Pennsylvania State University, he was arrested for an assault related charge and locked up for a year. During this stint, he took time to develop his MC skills, which translated to his potent battle-rapping ability once he was paroled.

In NYC, he won freestyle rap competitions like Braggin’ Rites and Rocksteady Anniversary. In 2001, he independently released his first album, The Revolution Vol. 1, and was featured in The Source’s “Unsigned Hype” column the year after. His second album, The Revolution Vol. 2, was released in 2003.

In addition to his music, Immortal Technique has been involved in both political activism and charitable work. He has made appearances in three documentaries, one of which featured protests of the 2004 Republican National Convention in New York. He has also traveled to Kabul, Afghanistan, to construct an orphanage in partnership with non-profit organization Omeid International.
