Lil Wop is a rapper originally from the Englewood neighborhood of Chicago, Illinois. Wop is also the cousin of fellow rapper Famous Dex. Growing up in Chicago, Lil Wop was hustling with a survival mentality, and eventually became affiliated with the Black P. Stone Nation gang. He was apparently kicked out of high school when he was about to graduate, but ended up graduating from an alternative school.
Through high school, he had freestyled for fun, but didn’t take it seriously until he moved to Atlanta. He said that he moved to Atlanta for new experiences and to get involved in music, but ended up associated with gang activity again. It wasn’t until late 2016 that Wop released his first mixtape, Wopster. Wop says he started taking music seriously because he was tired of going to jail and experiencing what he believed to be bad karma. While working on music in Atlanta, he caught the attention of Gucci Mane, who would ultimately end up signing him to his 1017 label in 2017.
Lil Wop calls it his stand out moment to date because he grew up a huge fan of Gucci, which is the inspiration for his rap name. He even had an ice cream cone tattooed on his face like Gucci Mane did. Lil Wop’s style is heavily drug influenced, and once said that he spends three to four racks on drugs a month. In 2017, Lil Wop went hard and made four different projects, 3 of which being the Wopaveli mixtape series. To date, his biggest hit has been “Lost My Mind,” which has over 1.5M views on YouTube.
