Rapsody is a rapper from Snow Hill, North Carolina. Born Marlanna Evans, Rapsody got her start in hip-hop after she enrolled in North Carolina State University in 2004 and joined the hip-hop group H20, and its subset, Kooley High. Not having rapped before, she began to hone her skills during her time at University, drawing upon her experience writing poetry. She chose her name after she came across the word “Rhapsody” in a dictionary, defined as “a written or spoken expression of great enthusiasm”, which described how she felt towards hip-hop.
Rapsody met producer 9th Wonder in 2006, who discovered her musical prowess while she was still in H20. He eventually ended up signing her to his label, It’s a Wonderful World Music Group, in 2008. Since then, Rapsody has released four mixtapes, three EPs, and two studio albums. She has also featured on an impressive number of other projects as well, most notably on the track “Complexion (A Zulu Love)” on Kendrick Lamar’s, To Pimp a Butterfly. In 2006, she signed to Jay-Z’s Roc Nation label.
