Tru Life, a rapper out of the Lower East Side of Manhattan, started his rap career in 1999 when he signed with Dreamworks Records. His debut album, Cryin’ Out Loud, was set to release in 2001, but was never released due to conflicts with the label. After parting ways with Dreamworks, Tru Life was able to get himself in front of Jay-Z and prove his worth, landing him a deal with Roc-A-Fella Records. In 2009, Tru Life and his brother were involved in a fight that resulted in a death and a wounding. Tru Life took a plea deal and spent 8 years in prison, where he obtained his GED and degrees in both Business and Biblical Studies. Although he took the plea deal, he consistently claims he is innocence. Tru Life has since dedicated himself to moving in a positive direction, leaving crime and gang life in his past and re-emphasizing the consciousness he has shown in the past. In fact, Tru Life’s name is an acronym for The Righteous Uniting those Living In a Fantasy Environment. In 2017, Tru Life signed to Future’s Freebandz label, as he had known Future long before his meteoric rise.
