Diddy may be exploring a another creative passion of art collecting. In all realness, the rapper has no shortage of money, landing a spot on Forbes list of top money. Besides spending his well-deserved earnings on designer clothing, he also has taken interest in paintings. Last Wednesday, Diddy purchased a composition entitled “Past Times” by artist Kerry James Marshall. The final bid was for $21 million.

Marshall’s work is inspired by African-American history, specifically in the U.S.. Many of the works of art hold similar techniques and characteristics to Veronese and Rembrandt. Marshall spent most of his childhood in the greater Los Angeles area, experiencing the vibrant lifestyle in that region. He now lives in Chicago with a gallery located in New York, where Sean Combs made a visit.

Swizz Beats and Alicia Keys are credited for introducing Diddy to the cultural artist. Marshall has now made history as the first African-American artist to receive this impressive amount for an artwork. Marshall’s gallerist made a heartwarming statement after the purchase.

“I know that this work has found a home in a collection with purpose and an eye toward preserving legacy — that of Sean Combs, and that means a lot.”

More of Marshall’s work is on display at the Museum of Contemporary Art Los Angeles and Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago.
