Is it all over?
50 Cent and executives at STARZ have been warring over renegotiations for 50’s hit show Power since the announcement that the wait for season 5 would be almost a year. As the new season begins prepping for production, Curtis ‘50 Cent’ Jackson (who serves as executive producer) has been beefing with the subscription-based network to get a bigger slice of their revenue pie.
According to reports, Power has been scoring record numbers of viewers, despite recent leaks of episodes. 50 Cent recently put out a call-to-arms for Power fans to cut their ties with Starz as he threatened execs to move the show to another network.
As of this writing, it seems like Fif’s strong arm tactics are going to pay off; he seems pretty excited about the results…
50 Loves Beef
50 Cent, who rose to prominence with Get Rich or Die Tryin, has seemingly been feuding with someone his entire career. Just recently he rekindled his feud flame with Irv Gotti over Fif’s distaste for his show Tales on BET. Perhaps it’s his own personal way of doing business, because Fiddy also has stake in BET with his comedy show 50 Central.
With his latest spat with STARZ execs, Fif posted his feelings on his Instagram:
“I hate when business people try to tell me what to do, what the f— you gonna do, not do the deal? I’m already rich d—head. I grew up around people who would kill you for playing with the money don’t play wit me. Stupid!!!”
Settling With Starz
According to Jackson’s latest Instagram post, he has struck a deal with Starz head Chris Albrect that has his hands “shaking.” For 50 Cent, a guy who once was worth somewhere around a half billion dollars after selling his minority share in Vitamin Water, that must be a lot of money!
Jackson announced on this post that Power will be back for season five much sooner than initially anticipated.
While it’s never been confirmed as to what exactly went awry between Power producers and the network, the most likely assumption was that the network’s contract did not anticipate the show to be such a success. 50 Cent, who also stars in the show, obviously took this personally and did what he had to do to get more money out of the deal.
This just goes to show you the power of celebrity influence in business. It wasn’t until Jackson called upon his millions of followers and fans of the show to end their Starz subscription that execs seemingly started paying attention. Would a show like Power have worked on BET? That’s debatable, but Starz can certainly afford to sign a bigger check.
With the highest-rated show on the network, Jackson was also able to leverage three more shows to work on in the future. We’re not sure exactly what they’ll be about, but according to his Instagram they may be titled BMF, Tomorro Today, and I Got Away.
Chalk this up as a big W for Curtis Jackson and his crew, as for him writing STARZ in sharpie on his forehead… that might be an L he’s going to have to eat (a lowercased one at least).
