Only Beyonce could have summoned Kendrick Lamar to baptize the BET Awards with their poignant collaboration, “Freedom.” Once the clock struck 8, eyes were glued centerstage. Queen B’s emphatic performance, punctuated by Kendrick Lamar’s verse, left everyone in awe. Because of these two, hip hop regained a pulse, this past Sunday night (June 26).
The Beauty of “Freedom”
The emotionally-charged record first sparked rave reviews from Beyonce’s latest release, Lemonade. With Just Blaze masterfully crafting the beat to her liking, she tapped hip hop’s Picasso in Kendrick Lamar to elegantly paint one of his vividest verses to date. The result? Powerful.
The performance was insane!
With Martin Luther King Jr’s “I Have a Dream” speech blaring through the speakers, Beyonce unexpectedly came out and laid the smackdown on that stage. As her dancers went toe-to-toe with her in hopes of providing sheer entertainment for the crowd’s amusement, it was crystal clear as to why Beyonce is considered one of the best performers of all-time.
As Beyonce’s dancers continued to kick and splash through the water during her performance, Cali’s very own Kendrick Lamar ascended from below the stage and morphed into the super beast that he is. To make things even more exciting, Kendrick rapped new lyrics to his verse for “Freedom.”
