Will this stick?
Diddy makes big announcements around his birthday, even if it’s just to tell everybody that he’s not ready to celebrate his birthday just yet. However, his latest yearly pronouncement carries a bit of weight.
The rapper, A&R, label head and alcohol mogul has decided to change his name… again. Though at one time Diddy’s name changes were common enough to warrant mockery in late night monologues and skits around the country, he’s been rocking with the name Diddy for quite a while.
Apparently though, that’s not him anymore. In a new post to Instagram, Diddy said that he wants to be called Love from this point on.
“I have some very serious, serious news. I’ve been praying on this and I decided – I know it was risky because I knew it could come off as corny to some people,” he said. “I’ve decided to change my name again. I’m just not who I am before (sic). I’m something different. So my new name is Love a.k.a. Brother Love.”
If you think you can get away with calling him Diddy, Sean Combs has some words for you. “I will not be answering to Puffy, Diddy, Puff Daddy or any of my other monikers,” he said.
Who knows if the name will stick? Is this another Snoop Lion incident, where a rapper will eventually change his mind and go back to the name that everyone’s calling him anyway?
Is this a “No, My Name Is Jeffery” situation, where virtually no one will go along with the name change at all so it will eventually be forgotten by the rapper as well as his audience?
Or is this a unique Diddy situation, where fans will come around to the new name and go along with the wishes of the artist? After all, we all thought Diddy was silly until it wasn’t.
The roasts are coming
Of course, we have to factor in that Diddy was celebrating his birthday and might have been on one. This could all be something that Diddy thinks is funny. We’ll have to wait until he gets back from the beach to really see if he wants to stick by this new name.
50 Cent has yet to weigh in on the name change, but rest assured, he will. If a filtered image on the cover of a magazine can set off the rapper, then changing your name to Love is bound to raise his hackles.
“N**ga tried to make his eyes look all glossy, This n**ga a fruit biscuit. LOL,” 50 wrote about Diddy’s cover of the 20th anniversary edition of XXL. “N**ga you ain’t got no hazel eyes, unless that’s like cataracts or some s**t. LOL.”
(50 might be too busy right now laying into Tyrese for crying all over the internet, but he’ll get around to the newly minted Brother Love soon enough.)
