It isn’t easy to earn a compliment from DMX. The boisterous rapper relishes in gnawing away at the confidence of other emcees. Rarely does he ever become calm and subdued to the point that he’ll admit whether an emcee has skills or not. Take Drake for example. When X first appeared on The Breakfast Club four years ago, he taunted the Toronto rapper. This time around, it appears that the Yonkers rapper changed his tune regarding Drizzy Drake in his newest interview.
DMX praises Drake for sampling him.
Back in 2012, DMX clowned Drake for innumerable reasons. From his haircut to his style of rap, DMX castrated the Toronto emcee. This time around, X had nicer things to say about Drake when he was welcomed back on the The Breakfast Club.
It all started with a phone call.
At the 25-minute mark of the interview, DMX explained how his opinion of Drake changed after the rapper called him up to discuss possibly sampling “What They Really Want” for his new album Views. The rapper complied and admitted that he never was a fan of Drake, but respected his lyricism. “I did always say that he was a talented lyricist, but I was not a fan,”he said.
“You didn’t like this guy for all the wrong reasons…” he explained. “For him to want to use a song of mine, and then to be man enough to make that call. That was a real move…it took a man to make a move like that. I salute him for that.”
DMX called it a “humbling” experience.
The “What’s My Name” rapper was so flattered by Drake’s call and fandom that he allowed the rapper to sample his record and later create “U With Me.” The ode of a record is a fan favorite and is considered one of the strongest tracks on Drake’s new album. DMX also explained how Drake praised him as a huge influence in music and how he in fact “raised” Drizzy and his crew growing up.
