Is this one for real?
Kevin Gates is getting out of prison next week.
According to TMZ the rapper is finally coming home after serving a sentence for kicking a fan at a 2015 concert in Florida and another for an unrelated weapons charge. The gossip website cites Lindsey Hess of the Illinois Department of Corrections, who says that the rapper will be out on parole under conditions that include mandatory supervision and no possession of firearms.
If Gates was a smart man though, he wouldn’t trust a word of it until he was back in his own home with the front door locked. Gates was scheduled to be released from his stint over the kicking charges previously, but on the day of his release, a warrant for his arrest was found in Illinois. He was extradited and sentenced to 30 months in prison for that charge.
Being in prison is no trip to camp. So, you would think having a release date cruelly dangled in front of him would get Gates down. Most people would feel dejected to have their freedom stripped away on the day they were supposed to go home. Gates, however, has kept his head up, working on music as he’s locked away. He is even orchestrating the release of a semi-autobiographical music video that seems to tell the story of Gates and his wife dealing with his incarceration. The video for the Joan Osbourne-flipping “What If” ended with a message of hope from Gates himself. Check it out below:
“In the name of the Most Gracious Most Merciful
“Dear Loyal Family, Disallow yourselves to be troubled in my time of absence. All of the great ones who came before and will come after me: Have had to go through this.
“By this I’m speaking in reference to hardship. A great a person is measured by all of the great tests they can undergo and still remain true to who they are. With that being said ‘I’m Him.’ I love you all. In closing, I remain the same.”
“Do not dwell on the things that have been put out by the media.”
Gates’ wife Dreka also shared a similar message to his fans, asking that they pour their energy into the idea of Gates being allowed to come home.
“To everyone that’s rooting for Kevin right now, thank you but please shift your thoughts, prayers, energy, etc. towards the idea of Kevin being home and enjoying his life as a free man,” she said. “Do not dwell on the things that have been put out by the media. Their only goal in anything is to grab/seek attention, not necessarily to release information that is factual.”
Barring the arrests, Kevin Gates’ trajectory has been trending steadily upward. His Luca Brasi Story mixtape and the studio album Islah were both critically and commercially successful. The Baton Rouge rapper looked poised to make the leap into the upper echelons of hip-hop before his stints in prison put the brakes on it. Hopefully, Kevin’s been writing and will come straight out of prison with some new material for his long-suffering fans.
