Double Cup Love.
Lean, purple drank, sizzurp — whatever you want to call it, it’s a big thing in the hip-hop industry. The concoction that includes prescription-strength cough syrup (containing codeine and promethazine) mixed with sprite is almost every rapper’s fave. But be careful, it can harm your health. Just ask Lil Wayne who has been hospitalized a few times behind the drink. And if too much is consumed, it can be fatal. Two of hip-hop’s greats, legendary rapper Pimp C and Houston-based DJ Screw have died from sipping sizzurp.
In an interview, after Pimp C’s death, his other half of UGK, Bun B, said, “Anyone out there thinking about sippin’ syrup or currently abusing syrup, [you] may want to take very a good look at yourself, a long look at yourself.” But these tragic happenings haven’t stopped rappers from sipping, and it doesn’t look like they’ll be putting their double cups down soon.
When you think of lean, you think of Lil Wayne. Everyone knows that it’s the rapper’s favorite drink. And everyone knows that it’s his favorite drink that almost took him out.
He’s almost died multiple times after suffering seizures due to his epilepsy that is triggered by lean. After being hospitalized numerous times, doctors have warned him about the drug, but Weezy can’t seem to part from his double cup. In a 2009 interview for VH1’s Behind the Music,” Wayne said, “I don’t care if it was heroin in my cup, it’s in MY cup” in response to fans and friends voicing concern over the rapper’s drug of choice.
Within the past few year, Future as become the spokesperson for lean. With his mixtape, Dirty Sprite 1 and Dirty Sprite 2, lean has pretty much been the blueprint to his career.
The Texas rapper isn’t at all new to the elixir. He began drinking the drank way back when, before it was popular. It’s been said that he got the recipe from fellow Texans Pimp C and DJ Screw. Um, I’m no doctor, but due to the nature of their deaths, the ‘Po Up Poet’ may wanna slow down on that recipe.
