In 2016, Mary J. Blige filed for divorce from her husband/manager, Martin “Kendu” Isaacs. Citing “irreconcilable differences” and “overwhelming disrespect,” the 47-year-old songstress publicly split from her spouse of nearly 13 years. While breaking up is hard to do, as they say, Mary upheld a strong demeanor. Though, she repeatedly vowed to never get married again.
“When I love you, I love you. I loved him,” she said on Power 105.1 in 2017. “When I love you, I give like, way too much, like, ‘Here, just take everything.’ But I will never do that again.”
Now, several headlines and court battles later, the divorce is finalized.
MJB walked into the Oscars a free, legally single women. According to Radar Online‘s sources, just two days before the award ceremony (March 2), a court official confirmed that Isaacs and Mary’s legal battles are officially done. While they were originally supposed to tie up loose ends in court after the star-studded event, as reported by The Blast, the two were able to settle things beforehand without seeing each other.
Inquiring minds want to know what Isaacs will do now, as his résumé is filled with Mary J. Blige credits. The singer — who has no biological children of her own — was the primary bread winner of their family. The responsibility reportedly put a huge strain on the star.
As the singer began to share more about her relationship with her now-ex-husband, fans learned that she was in millions of dollars in debt. Mary claims to owe about 10 million dollars alongside alleging that Isaacs still has her “Grammy and other achievement awards” as well as a Mercedes that she paid for.
She could have gotten a few of her possessions back, however nothing has been confirmed as the details of the settlement haven’t been released, but… Anyone who’s been paying attention can assume that the father-of-three got some money out of the deal.
Whispers of Isaacs’ infidelity flooded social media feeds just before news of the producer requesting spousal support hit the internet. Over the summer of 2017, the “Family Affair” singer was required to pay her ex $30,000 in temporary spousal support, after his request for $129,319 per month was denied.
Regardless, single looks good on the Queen of Hip Hop Soul. After legally parting ways with Isaacs, she made history at the 90th Academy Awards. Mary J. is the first person to receive double nominations for Best Original Song and Best Supporting Actress.
Though she didn’t bring an award home, she left the stage a little softer afterwards. Giving the first performance of original songs of the night, she sang Mudbound’s “Mighty River” — the track which earned her a nomination — with a heavy heart.
Before breaking the Oscar’s stage in like a pair of new shoes, she joined the group of several celebrities who welcomed Ryan Seacrest on the red carpet. After the famed host was accused of sexual misconduct by his former personal stylist, rumors that Seacrest would be ostracized at the event sparked.
According to Mary, the 43-year-old personality is “fighting for his life right now.” She acknowledged the fact that she doesn’t know the whole story before saying she loves Seacrest. She went on to speak on the importance of the #MeToo movement and making women feel empowered to speak out and tell their stories.
