A Song That Will Represent All Races
Could ‘The Star Spangled Banner’ be getting a bad and boujee makeover? According to Migos’ head honcho Quavo, he’s romancing the idea. Last week, a petition was started on Change.org to have the Atlanta rapper take a shot at modernizing Francis Scott Key’s iconic anthem; after generating thousands of signatures seemingly overnight, he’s finally addressing the possibility of making it a reality. Of course, he’d do it in true Quavo fashion…
Recently the national anthem has been at the center of plenty of controversy. After Colin Kaepernick’s now-infamous sideline kneel to the fact that the song simply doesn’t feel like it represents the cultural powderkeg that is modern America today, now seems like a better time than any to revisit the antiquated anthem. With all the craziness going on in our country today, we say, “hey… why the heck not.”
As of this writing, the petition on Change.org has almost 8,000 supporters. Many of them seem like tongue in cheek signatures, but if there’s anything that we have learned in the past year, you should never underestimate the power of the Internet.
Originally written in 1814 by Francis Scott Key and adapted to the tune of an old British song, the “Star Spangled Banner” is notoriously hard to sing. We’ve all seen our fair share of botched performances at baseball games and other sporting events. Perhaps it’s about time we add some of Quavo’s legendary mouth effects (bbrrrraapp) to give everybody a chance to participate easily.
Quavo is serously thinking about it
While leaving an airport this past week, TMZ caught up with Quavo and asked his thoughts on the popular online petition. He told TMZ:
“There’s a lot going behind the national anthem, I would love to do it, but I wanna do a 2017 national anthem for both people and all races. Something that’s representing now. Something that representing the modern day national anthem.”
We’ve all heard plenty of Quavo’s lyrics in the past year as Migos has rocketed to the top of the music industry, and let’s just say, these sound like themes he doesn’t normally address. Are we about to see a new phase of Migos’ evolution? One that is more socially conscious and unifying? Who knows…
Watch For Yourself
Whether or not Quavo will actually follow through with the idea has yet to be determined. We know he’s got a pretty busy schedule going forward; a big project with Travis Scott is in the works as well as Migos’ follow-up to their smash album, Culture 2, is expected to be released later this year.
The idea that congress (and especially our current president) would make whatever Quavo comes up with an official anthem is highly doubtful. We can dream though, right? What if we just keep the old one and add a featured verse by Quavo? That might be pretty cool!
If it does happen however, I’d like to start a petition to have Kanye design a new American flag. Maybe something similar to the hodgepodge that was his “Life of Pablo” cover? Ah, I kid…
