Teyana Taylor just keeps on winning. In a year that’s seen her stop an entire viewing audience’s hearts in their chests via the “Fade” video premiere and absolutely destroy a catwalk at New York Fashion Week, the songwriter and model just had to get one more win in.
Taylor announced today, along with her NBA hubby Iman Shumpert, that she’s going to star in her own reality TV series. Teyana and Iman is scheduled to start airing this February, giving fans of the couple and in-depth look into their marriage and bringing up of their young daughter Junie.
A Loving Relationship
The pair announced the new show via a cute promo that features them explaining the show while keeping one eye on their toddler as she moves around the set. The couple explained that they wanted to be an antidote to the negative representation of black familial relationships that crop up in drama-starved reality shows.
“When I look at reality shows it don’t look like reality to me,” Shumpert explained. “It’s so important to be a positive representation of black love that my a** actually got on TV to do it.”
Teyana picked up the thread as Shumpert tried to keep Junie from putting something in her mouth.
“Not even just Black love, all love. It’s to inspire love, period,” she said, trying to speak over Shumpert’s objections. “There’s nothing more special than showing young people that you can be in love —”
She wheeled on Shumpert after he groaned over her.
“That was only on the floor for two seconds. Come on, let me get my answer out,” she said.
The playful ribbing between the pair echoes what we’ve seen from them on social media. Shumpert seems to be his wife’s number one fan — as we saw first hand when he gushed on Instagram about her closing slot in a NYFW show.
“Backstage. Everyone deserves closure. Phillip picked the right one to close his. Ouch. #nyfw #philipplein #almondyaf,” he wrote.

Given Taylor’s stage-slaughtering stomp in lingerie, how else could he react? We need to be fair, but it does seem like Taylor needs that ego boost. In spite of her other-worldly dancing ability and what she looks at in the mirror every morning, interviews with Taylor show that she’s her own harshest critic.
Taylor — who claims she does no workouts other than dancing — told Vogue that she was terrified about how she might look in Kanye’s “Fade” video. She apparently saw the final product when it premiered at the VMAs:
“When I heard that the video was going to be premiering at the VMAs, I was like ‘Oh my god, it’s tonight! Do I look good? Do I look great? Is he going to change his mind and not premiere it?’” she said. “At that point I had already told all of my family, but even when he went onstage and I saw him, I thought he might just wind up doing something completely different because you just never know with Kanye.”
