Why Did T.I. Called His Marriage a "Distraction"
Recently, notorious rapper T.I. did an interview on Angie Martinez’s radio show, “The Voice of New York”, where he stated “It just seems to me like marriage and what marriage means, it’s just one of those things that’s going to distract me and deter me.” This, of course, set off fireworks all over the blogs, and even in his household. In Episode 7 of T.I. and Tiny: The Family Hustle, we get a better understanding of what T.I. meant by this statement. Was it intended?
In a meeting with his team, T.I. claims what he meant was he clearly wasn’t good at being a husband, so maybe he can be a better best friend.
Why? Because the actions that are required of him to not only be responsible for his relationship; but also the heavy pressure of being artist that he needs needs to be weren’t working together. Okay, we get the reasoning: It’s hard to juggle marriage and a successful career. But does that make it okay to use the word “distraction”?
The men in the meeting seemed think so, but the women disagreed. “This person has had your back, been supportive of you, held you down… and you are now calling this person a distraction” one woman said. The men countering with why is it okay for a woman to say, she wants to focus and can’t have any distractions when a man is trying to date them? Good point, but T.I. stands firm. In his words, “Say hello to the bad guy”.
Still not getting it, T.I. decided to get some words of wisdom from his mother, Latrice, who didn’t see anything wrong with what he said. She felt if her husband said that she was his best friend then that’s what is supposed to happen.
Tiny’s mother, Ms. Diane, had a very different opinion however. After sending T.I. a “threatening text” he decided to have a heart-to-heart with her. “Do I think we could be together, yes? Could we be happy? That’s the question. We have not found a way to co-exist together where both of us can live life the way we see fit to live it together anymore. And I think that’s our problem more than anything.”, T.I. explains. Diane suggests T.I. and Tiny have a talk, because Ms. Diane feels their marriage can be fixed.
Taking Diane’s advice, T.I. decided to drop in on Tiny to have a real discussion. He quickly learned Tiny considered herself the “marriage” so when he said the marriage was a distraction, she automatically thought he meant her. Meanwhile, T.I. sees the marriage and her as two different things. A common issue couples face, one not hearing / understanding what the other is really trying to say. It seems there are still a lot of unresolved issues between this couple.
