Hip Hop and Rap have become some of music’s most popular genres. Though it began in inner city communities, Rap music has spread all over the world- from the suburbs to even overseas. Naturally, with Rap music fans becoming increasingly diverse, so are the artists who make the music. In recent years, there’s been an uptick in rappers with Jewish roots, a pairing once thought absurd. Many of today’s most popular rappers are more likely to be wearing a diamond covered Star of David than a blinged out Jesus Piece at the club!

If you’ve ever seen the video for HYFR, you might’ve guessed Drake is Jewish. Born and raised in Ontario, Canada, Aubrey Drake Graham attended a Jewish day school and became a cast member of the Canadian TV series Degrassi: The Next Generation.

This Jewish reggae rapper is known for blending Orthodox themes with reggae and hip hop sounds. His stage name, “Matisyahu,” literally means “gift of God” in Hebrew, and many people would definitely agree his talents are heaven-sent.
