Netflix has been going hard with a lot of new original series lately, and this time around, they’re stepping into hip hop culture. The streaming service is releasing a brand new series sometime this year called The Get Down, which follows the story of how hip hop came to formation as a genre and culture back in the 1970’s. With the popularity of nostalgic hip hop movies and shows, such as the recent The Breaks on VH1, this time around we’ll see tons of action, dancing, and music that take us back to the beginning era that isn’t touched upon as much.

The 1970’s hip hop era is overlooked
When many think about old school hip hop, today’s culture will usually refer back to either the 90’s era, or even the 1980’s, which was also the beginning years of Def Jam and many other artists. While artists from the 80’s had a big influence on hip hop culture being catapulted into mainstream music culture, it was the 70s’ that was filled with the true pioneers.
Why it needs to be acknowledged
The pioneers of hip hop created huge stepping stones for the genre to be pushed forward into music culture in general. The four common elements of hip hop, the MC, the graffiti artist, the DJ, and the b-boy, came to fruition in this era, and changed the face of music with its introduction. It had to overcome all kinds of struggles in order to be taken seriously, which wouldn’t have happened without the pioneer era.
