Will The Real Cookie Lyon Please Stand Up

Since its debut in the last winter, Fox’s Empire has not only taking off in TV ratings, but it’s also becoming a household American favorite. Although the story line is great, what really captivates viewers are the characters. One beloved favorite is Cookie Lyon, played by Taraji P. Henson.

As Empire gears up for its second season next month, an interesting character or real life persona (as she’s clamming to be) has surfaced into the mix. Allegedly, a 53-year-old Detroit woman, by the name of Sophia Eggleston is clamming to be the real Cookie Lyon. She’s suing the shows co-creator, Lee Daniels, for $300 million stating that Cookie’s character was created based on her and her real life.

Sophia Eggleston details her past as a “drug kingpin” and she was incarcerated for manslaughter after placing a “hit” on someone — as evidence. In 2011, Eggleston, published a memoir, the Hidden Hand, and believes that its racy contents were repurposed for Empire after she tried to sell it to screenwriter Rita Miller.

After the show aired in 2015, Eggleston was surprised by the uncanny similarities to her own life. So much so that she felt the only next necessary step of action was to file suit against the show’s co-creator. The suit claims she was “dismayed to see the various similarities of events and characters…so numerous and specific, especially…Cookie Lyon, that independent creation was obviously impossible.” The suit also alleges that “there is no possibility the similarities are…mere coincidence. Defendants had access to and a copy of her book.”

All of this seems a lil’ fishy. There’s a strong chance that she could be telling the truth or she could be lying, because let’s be honest — there are a million female drug kingpins that have moved weight, done time in the pen, and can easily say that Cookie Lyon is based off of their life, but doesn’t mean it’s true.

Let’s see how this pans out.

In the meantime, check out the trailer for Season 2 of Empire, premiering September 23rd on Fox.
