You Won’t Believe What Macklemore Said About Iggy Azalea On His New Song

Macklemore has had a very odd place in hip hop over the past few years since he came on the mainstream scene, but he’s making sure to establish to other white artists what their own place is. The rapper dropped his brand new track “White Privilege II” this morning, where he calls out Iggy Azalea, as well as Miley Cyrus, for their appropriation of black culture. Macklemore raps, “You’ve exploited and stolen the music, the moment/The magic, the passion, the fashion you toyed with/The culture was never yours to make better/You’re Miley, you’re Elvis, you’re Iggy Azalea.”

What is Macklemore’s message?

Macklemore is trying to call out those who don’t recognize their white privilege, or acknowledge that it exists, but still appropriate hip hop culture any chance they get. The track is made to expose the ways of white people who don’t understand what they’re listening to, but seek the approval of the hip hop community.
